Nutrition in Plants and Animals

Lesson 9 of 30
1 min read Mathew Wahome

Introduction

Nutrition is how living things get the food they need to grow and stay healthy. Plants and animals both need nutrition to survive.

Nutrition in Plants

Plants make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. They use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make food (glucose) and release oxygen. This food gives them energy to grow and thrive.

Example: Think of a tree in the garden. It gets energy from the sun to make its own food and grow tall and strong.

Nutrition in Animals

Animals cannot make their own food like plants. They need to eat other living things for nutrition. Animals get food from plants or other animals to get the energy they need to move and stay healthy.

Example: When you eat fruits, vegetables, or meat, you are getting the nutrition your body needs to grow and play.

Fun Activity

Try planting a seed in a small pot and watch it grow over a few weeks. Water it regularly and place it in a sunny spot. You will see how plants also need nutrition to grow just like us!

Remember

  • Plants make their own food through photosynthesis.
  • Animals get nutrition by eating plants or other animals.
  • Eating a balanced diet helps us stay healthy and strong.
