Multiplication as Repeated Addition

Equal groups

Multiplication is a quick way to add equal groups. 3 baskets with 4 mangoes each: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12, written 3 x 4 = 12.

Times tables

x2 x5 x10
2 x 1 = 2 5 x 1 = 5 10 x 1 = 10
2 x 2 = 4 5 x 2 = 10 10 x 2 = 20
2 x 3 = 6 5 x 3 = 15 10 x 3 = 30
2 x 4 = 8 5 x 4 = 20 10 x 4 = 40

Order does not matter

3 x 4 = 4 x 3 = 12.

Try it

  1. Write 5 + 5 + 5 as a multiplication sentence.
  2. There are 4 desks with 2 learners each. How many learners?
