Introduction

Fractions are a way of showing parts of a whole. It helps us understand how to share things equally.

Understanding Fractions

What is a Fraction?

A fraction is a number that shows how many parts of a whole we have. It has two parts: the top number is called the numerator, and the bottom number is called the denominator.

Example: If we have 2 out of 5 apples, we write it as $\frac{2}{5}$.

Types of Fractions

  1. Proper Fraction: When the numerator is smaller than the denominator. Example: $\frac{1}{3}$.
  2. Improper Fraction: When the numerator is equal to or greater than the denominator. Example: $\frac{5}{4}$.

Using Fractions in Real Life

Imagine you have a pizza. If you eat 3 out of 8 slices, you have eaten $\frac{3}{8}$ of the pizza.

Fun Activity

Let's play a game! Take a chocolate bar and divide it into halves, quarters, and eighths. Try to write the fractions for each piece you have!

Remember

  • A fraction has a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number).
  • Proper fractions have the numerator smaller than the denominator.
  • Improper fractions have the numerator equal to or greater than the denominator.
