Introduction

Integers are a set of whole numbers that include zero, positive numbers, and negative numbers. In mathematics, integers are represented by the symbol $\mathbb{Z}$. Understanding integers is crucial as they form the basis for many mathematical operations and concepts.

Definition of Integers

Integers are whole numbers that can be positive, negative, or zero. They are denoted by the symbol $\mathbb{Z}$. Integers include numbers like -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, etc.

Example:

Let's consider the set of integers: ${-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3}$. These numbers are all integers as they are whole numbers.

Addition of Integers

Adding integers involves combining positive and negative numbers. When adding integers, we follow the rules:

  1. If both numbers have the same sign (either both positive or both negative), add their absolute values and keep the sign.
  2. If the numbers have different signs, subtract their absolute values and keep the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.

Example:

Find the sum of $-5$ and $3$.

Solution:

$-5 + 3 = -2$

Subtraction of Integers

Subtracting integers is similar to adding them, but with the difference that we change the operation to subtraction.

Example:

Calculate $8 - (-2)$.

Solution:

$8 - (-2) = 8 + 2 = 10$

Multiplication of Integers

Multiplying integers involves understanding the rules of positive and negative numbers:

  1. If the signs are the same (both positive or both negative), the product is positive.
  2. If the signs are different, the product is negative.

Example:

Multiply $-4$ by $6$.

Solution:

$-4 \times 6 = -24$

Division of Integers

Dividing integers follows similar rules to multiplication:

  1. If the signs are the same, the quotient is positive.
  2. If the signs are different, the quotient is negative.

Example:

Divide $-15$ by $3$.

Solution:

$-15 \div 3 = -5$

Common Mistakes

  1. Forgetting the sign rules in multiplication and division.
  2. Confusing addition and subtraction operations.
  3. Misinterpreting the signs in complex expressions.

Key Points

  • Integers are whole numbers that can be positive, negative, or zero.
  • Addition and subtraction of integers involve combining or taking away positive and negative numbers.
  • Multiplication and division of integers follow specific rules based on the signs of the numbers.

Practice Questions

  1. Calculate: $-7 + 5 - 3$.

    Answer:

    $-7 + 5 - 3 = -5$

  2. Find the product of $-9$ and $4$.

    Answer:

    $-9 \times 4 = -36$

  3. Evaluate: $-20 \div (-5)$.

    Answer:

    $-20 \div (-5) = 4$

  4. Solve: $-3 - (-8) + 2$.

    Answer:

    $-3 - (-8) + 2 = 3$

  5. Determine the value of $-6 \times (-3)$.

    Answer:

    $-6 \times (-3) = 18$
