Multiplication

Lesson 36 of 138
1 min read Mathew Wahome

Introduction

Multiplication is a way of adding equal groups together quickly. It helps us solve problems by finding the total amount when we have multiple groups of the same number.

What is Multiplication?

Repeated Addition

Imagine you have 3 groups of 4 apples each. To find out how many apples you have in total, you can add them up one by one: $4 + 4 + 4$. Instead of doing this, you can use multiplication: $3 \times 4 = 12$. This means you have 12 apples in total.

Arrays

Multiplication can also be shown using arrays. For example, if you have 2 rows of 3 stars each, you can multiply to find the total number of stars: $2 \times 3 = 6$.

Fun Activity

Try making your own multiplication problems using objects around you. For example, if you have 4 pencils and 5 erasers, how many items do you have in total?

Remember

  • Multiplication helps us quickly find the total when we have equal groups.
  • You can think of it as repeated addition or using arrays.
  • Practice making your own multiplication problems with objects you have at home.
