Creation
Introduction
In the Junior School CBC (KICD), Christian Religious Education begins with Creation. Learners study how the Bible says God made the world and what this means for how they live. (Learners of other faiths follow IRE or HRE with similar themes.)
The account in Genesis 1
God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh:
- Day 1 - light, separated from darkness.
- Day 2 - the sky.
- Day 3 - dry land, seas and plants.
- Day 4 - sun, moon and stars.
- Day 5 - fish and birds.
- Day 6 - land animals and human beings.
- Day 7 - God rested.
After each work God saw that it was good.
The account in Genesis 2
God formed man from the dust and breathed into him the breath of life. He placed him in the Garden of Eden to work and take care of it, and made woman as a companion.
What creation teaches us
- God is the Creator, powerful and wise.
- Human beings are special, made in God's image.
- Creation is good and has value.
- Humans are stewards, caretakers of the earth.
Caring for creation
- Plant and protect trees.
- Keep water sources clean.
- Avoid littering and waste.
- Use resources wisely and do not harm animals.
Worked example
A school notices a dry, bare compound. Learners plant indigenous trees and water them in turns. This shows stewardship, because they obey the command to care for the earth.
Try it
- List the things God created on each of the six days.
- Write two reasons why human beings are special.
- Plan one activity to care for the environment at school.
- Memorise Genesis 1:27.
