Introduction

Cell biology is the study of cells, which are the basic structural and functional units of all living organisms. Cells carry out various functions necessary for life, such as growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli. Cell Structure

In cell biology, there are two main types of cells: prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells.

Prokaryotic Cells

  • Definition: Prokaryotic cells are simple cells that do not have a true nucleus or membrane-bound organelles.
  • Example: Bacteria are examples of prokaryotic cells.
  • Structure: Prokaryotic cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, and a single circular DNA molecule located in the nucleoid region.

Eukaryotic Cells

  • Definition: Eukaryotic cells are complex cells that have a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
  • Example: Plant and animal cells are examples of eukaryotic cells.
  • Structure: Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus that houses the genetic material, membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi apparatus, as well as a cytoskeleton for support and movement.

Cell Organelles

Cell organelles are specialized structures within a cell that perform specific functions.

Mitochondria

  • Function: Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell because they produce energy in the form of ATP through cellular respiration.
  • Example: During cellular respiration, glucose and oxygen are converted into carbon dioxide, water, and ATP in the mitochondria.

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

  • Function: The endoplasmic reticulum is involved in protein and lipid synthesis.
  • Example: Rough ER has ribosomes attached to its surface, which synthesize proteins, while smooth ER is involved in lipid metabolism.

Golgi Apparatus

  • Function: The Golgi apparatus processes and packages proteins and lipids into vesicles for transportation within and outside the cell.
  • Example: Proteins synthesized in the rough ER are modified and packaged in the Golgi apparatus before being transported to their final destinations.

  • Confusing prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells: Remember that prokaryotic cells lack a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, while eukaryotic cells have these structures.
