Topic 6: Nehemiah and the Rebuilding of the Walls of Jerusalem

1. Background

  • After the Babylonian exile (586 BC), some Jews returned to Judah under Persian rule.
  • Nehemiah was a Jew serving as cupbearer to King Artaxerxes I at Susa, about 445 BC.
  • Jerusalem's walls and gates remained in ruins, leaving the city defenceless and disgraced.

2. Nehemiah's Call and Preparation (Nehemiah 1-2)

  1. He heard the report from Hanani, wept, fasted and prayed, confessing the sins of the people.
  2. When the king noticed his sadness, Nehemiah prayed and asked to be sent to rebuild Jerusalem.
  3. The king granted permission, letters and materials, and appointed him governor.
  4. In Jerusalem, Nehemiah secretly inspected the walls at night and then challenged the leaders to rebuild.

3. Rebuilding the Wall (Nehemiah 3-6)

  • Work was shared: families and groups each repaired a section.
  • The wall was completed in 52 days.

Opposition

Schemes to harm or distract him Refused meetings; exposed false prophets
Internal injustice (Neh 5) Called an assembly and stopped usury

4. Religious Reforms

  1. Public reading of the Law by Ezra (Neh 8) and celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles.
  2. Confession and covenant renewal (Neh 9-10): the people pledged to obey God's law, keep the Sabbath and support the temple.
  3. Dedication of the wall (Neh 12).
  4. Later reforms (Neh 13): stopped Sabbath trading, removed Tobiah from the temple storeroom, dealt with mixed marriages and restored temple support for Levites.
