Reproduction in Plants and Animals

Grade 6 · Science and Technology 1 min read

Introduction

Reproduction is how living things make more of themselves. In plants and animals, reproduction helps new plants and animals grow.

Reproduction in Plants

Plants can reproduce in two ways:

  • Sexual reproduction: This is when a plant makes seeds by combining pollen and egg cells. Example: A flower turning into a fruit with seeds.
  • Asexual reproduction: This is when a plant makes new plants without seeds. Example: A potato growing a new plant from its eye.

Reproduction in Animals

Animals also reproduce in two ways:

  • Sexual reproduction: This is when animals make babies by combining egg and sperm cells. Example: A hen laying eggs that hatch into chicks.
  • Asexual reproduction: Some animals like starfish can grow new parts to make new animals.
