Fractions
Introduction
Fractions are like pieces of a whole. Imagine sharing a pizza with friends - each slice is a fraction of the whole pizza!
Understanding Fractions
Parts of a Fraction
A fraction has two parts: the numerator (top number) and the denominator (bottom number). For example, in the fraction $\frac{3}{4}$, 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator.
Everyday Examples
- Sharing Candy: If you have 6 candies and you share half with a friend, it's $\frac{1}{2}$ of the candies.
- Pizza Slices: If you eat 2 out of 8 pizza slices, you've eaten $\frac{2}{8}$ of the pizza.
Fun Activity
Ask a family member for some fruit. Divide it into halves, quarters, and eighths. Use the pieces to create fractions like $\frac{1}{2}$, $\frac{1}{4}$, and $\frac{1}{8}$.
Remember
- Fractions show parts of a whole.
- The top number is the numerator, and the bottom number is the denominator.
- Fractions can represent sharing, parts of shapes, or numbers.
