God the Creator

God the Creator

Many Kenyans believe God made the heavens, the earth and everything in them. The KICD Religious Education curriculum teaches Grade 4 learners about God as Creator and their responsibility to care for creation. This note respects Christian, Islamic and Hindu teachings.

The creation story

In Genesis 1 of the Bible, God created in order:

  1. Day 1: light
  2. Day 2: sky
  3. Day 3: land, seas and plants
  4. Day 4: sun, moon and stars
  5. Day 5: fish and birds
  6. Day 6: animals and human beings
  7. Day 7: God rested

God saw that everything was good.

Other beliefs

Muslims believe Allah created the heavens and the earth. Many African communities, such as the Gikuyu with Ngai and the Luo with Nyasaye, also teach that God made all things.

Human beings are special

People were made in God's image and given the task of looking after the earth.

Caring for creation

  • Plant and protect trees.
  • Do not waste water.
  • Keep the home and school clean.
  • Be kind to animals.
  • Do not pollute rivers.

Giving thanks

We thank God for creation through prayer, songs and good deeds. Saying thank you for food, rain and family is one way to show we value what we have been given.

Try it

  • List five things God created that you see every day.
  • Say a short prayer of thanks for creation.
  • Plan one way you will care for the environment this week.
