Introduction to Division

Grade 2 · Mathematics 1 min read

Introduction

Division is a way of sharing things equally or finding out how many groups you can make.

Sharing Equally

Imagine you have 10 candies and you want to share them equally with 2 friends. You will give each friend 5 candies. This is division!

Grouping Objects

If you have 15 marbles and you want to put them into 3 bags with the same number of marbles in each bag, you will have 5 marbles in each bag. This is also division!

Everyday Division

Let's say you have 12 apples and you want to put them into 4 baskets. You will need to divide the apples equally into each basket to make sure each basket has the same number of apples.

Fun Activity

Ask an adult to give you a set of objects, like buttons or toys. Try to divide them into groups equally. Count how many are in each group to make sure they are shared fairly.

Remember

  • Division is about sharing things equally.
  • You can divide objects into groups to make sure each group has the same amount.
  • Practice dividing objects into groups to become better at division.
