Grade 1 · Mathematics 1 min read

Introduction

Subtraction is taking away. When we subtract, we have less.

Concept 1: Subtracting with Objects

Imagine you have 7 apples. Your friend gives you 3 more apples. How many apples do you have now? Let's subtract to find out.

$$ 7 - 3 = 4 $$

So, you now have 4 apples.

Concept 2: Using Number Line

Let's say you are at number 8 on the number line. If you move 2 steps back, where will you be? Let's subtract to find out.

$$ 8 - 2 = 6 $$

You will be at number 6.

Fun Activity

Take 10 crayons. Give 2 crayons to your friend. How many crayons do you have left? Use the crayons to physically subtract and count how many are left.

Remember

  • Subtraction means taking away.
