Addition

What is addition?

Addition means putting groups together to find the total. We use the plus sign (+) and the equals sign (=).

Number sentence

3 + 2 = 5

  • 3 and 2 are the numbers being added.
  • 5 is the answer, called the sum or total.

Using objects

3 mangoes and 2 mangoes together make 5 mangoes.

Counting on with a number line

To add 6 + 3, start at 6 and jump 3 steps: 7, 8, 9. So 6 + 3 = 9.

Helpful facts

  • Adding 0 does not change a number: 5 + 0 = 5.
  • Order does not matter: 2 + 4 = 4 + 2 = 6.

Try it

  1. 5 + 4 = ?
  2. 7 + 3 = ?
  3. Ali has 6 marbles and gets 2 more. How many has he now?
