Sculpture

Grade 1 · Creative Arts 2 min read

Introduction

A sculpture is a picture you can hold or walk around.
It is made by shaping something solid – like clay, play‑dough, wood or even sand – into a picture or a shape.

What can be a sculpture?

Everyday thing How it can be a sculpture
Clay pot Shaped by hand into a round bowl – that bowl is a sculpture.
Sandcastle Made by piling sand and pressing it with a stick.
Play‑dough animal You roll and pinch play‑dough to look like a dog or a bird.
Wooden spoon Carved by a craftsman – the spoon is a small sculpture.

Materials we can use

  • Soft materials – play‑dough, modelling clay, dough, soft wax.
  • Hard materials – wood, stone, metal, cardboard.
  • Natural materials – sticks, leaves, shells, stones.

We choose a material that is easy for us to shape. For Grade 1, soft materials like play‑dough are best because they are safe and can be reshaped.

Fun Activity

Make a Play‑Dough Fruit Sculpture

  1. Take a small ball of play‑dough.
  2. Roll it into a smooth ball – this will be an apple.
  3. Use a toothpick (or a safe plastic stick) to make a tiny leaf on top.
  4. Press gently to give the apple a little bump where the leaf meets the fruit.
  5. Show your fruit to the class and tell them its name.

You can also try making a banana, orange, or a small vegetable!

Remember

  • A sculpture is a 3‑D picture you can touch.
  • You can use soft (play‑dough) or hard (wood) materials.
  • Think, shape, add details – those are the basic steps.
  • Keep your hands clean and work on a flat surface.
  • Have fun and be proud of your creation!
