Introduction

In Pre-Technical Studies, a simple machine is a basic mechanical device that helps make work easier by either changing the direction or magnitude of a force. Simple machines are the building blocks of more complex machines and are used in everyday life.

Lever

A lever is a rigid bar that rotates around a fixed point called a fulcrum. It is used to lift or move heavy objects with less effort. The effort force (E), load force (L), and fulcrum are the key components of a lever. Example: A seesaw in a playground is a type of lever. When two children of different weights sit on either end, the seesaw balances around the fulcrum.

Pulley

A pulley is a wheel with a groove along its edge to hold a rope or belt. It is used to lift heavy objects by applying a pulling force. Pulleys can be fixed, movable, or compound. Example: A flagpole uses a pulley system to raise and lower the flag.

Inclined Plane

An inclined plane is a flat surface that is tilted at an angle. It reduces the force needed to lift an object by increasing the distance over which the force is applied. Example: A ramp used to move heavy boxes into a truck is an inclined plane.

Wheel and Axle

A wheel and axle consist of a wheel attached to a smaller axle. It is used to move objects with less friction. The wheel rotates around the axle to make work easier. Example: A bicycle uses a wheel and axle system to propel the rider forward with less effort.
