Introduction

In chemistry, salts are compounds composed of positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions). Salts are formed through the reaction between an acid and a base, or through a neutralization reaction. They can be classified into different types based on their composition and properties.

Types of Salts

1. Normal Salts

  • Definition: Normal salts are formed when all the replaceable hydrogen atoms in an acid are replaced by a metal or ammonium ion.
  • Example:
    • When hydrochloric acid ($HCl$) reacts with sodium hydroxide ($NaOH$), sodium chloride ($NaCl$) is formed: $$HCl + NaOH \rightarrow NaCl + H_2O$$

2. Acid Salts

  • Definition: Acid salts are formed when only a part of the hydrogen in an acid is replaced by a metal or ammonium ion.
  • Example:
    • When sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$) reacts with sodium hydroxide ($NaOH$), sodium hydrogen sulfate ($NaHSO_4$) is formed: $$H_2SO_4 + NaOH \rightarrow NaHSO_4 + H_2O$$

3. Basic Salts

  • Definition: Basic salts are formed when the cation of the salt has hydroxide ions.
  • Example:
    • When copper(II) hydroxide ($Cu(OH)_2$) reacts with sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$), copper(II) sulfate ($CuSO_4$) and water ($H_2O$) are formed: $$Cu(OH)_2 + H_2SO_4 \rightarrow CuSO_4 + 2H_2O$$

4. Double Salts

  • Definition: Double salts are compounds containing more than one kind of cation or anion.
  • Example:
    • Potash alum ($KAl(SO_4)_2 \cdot 12H_2O$) is a double salt containing potassium, aluminum, sulfate, and water ions.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing the types of salts: It is important to understand the differences between normal, acid, basic, and double salts to avoid mixing them up in exam questions.
  • Incorrectly balancing chemical equations: Make sure to balance the chemical equations properly to avoid errors in determining the products formed.
