Matter

Introduction

Matter is everything around us! It's what makes up everything we can touch, see, or feel.

States of Matter

  • Solid: Solids have a fixed shape and volume. For example, a book is solid because it keeps its shape.
  • Liquid: Liquids can change shape but not volume. Think of water - it takes the shape of its container but stays the same amount.
  • Gas: Gases have no fixed shape or volume. Imagine the air we breathe - it fills the space it's in.

Properties of Matter

  • Mass: Mass is the amount of matter in an object. The more mass something has, the heavier it is.
  • Volume: Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. A big balloon has more volume than a small one.

Fun Activity

Try this fun experiment at home! Take a glass of water and freeze it in the freezer. Watch how the water changes from a liquid to a solid (ice)!

Remember

  • Matter is everything around us.
  • Matter can be in the form of solids, liquids, or gases.
  • Mass is how much matter is in an object.
  • Volume is the space that matter takes up.
