Soil conservation

Introduction

Soil conservation is all about taking care of the soil to keep it healthy and fertile for growing plants.

Importance of Soil Conservation

  • Preventing Soil Erosion: Just like how water washes away soil during heavy rains, wind can also blow away soil. By planting trees or grass along the edges of farms, the soil can be protected from being carried away by water and wind.
  • Using Mulch: Mulch is like a blanket for the soil. It helps to keep the soil moist, prevents weeds from growing, and protects the soil from heavy rain.
  • Crop Rotation: Instead of growing the same crop in the same place every year, farmers can plant different crops in different seasons. This helps to maintain the nutrients in the soil.

Fun Activity

Try making a mini compost pit in your backyard! Collect kitchen scraps like fruit peels, vegetable leftovers, and eggshells. Layer them with dry leaves or grass clippings. Keep the pit covered and turn the compost every few weeks. In a few months, you'll have rich compost to add to your garden soil.

Remember
