Addition and Subtraction within 100

Introduction

In Grade 2, we are learning about addition and subtraction within 100. This means we will be adding numbers together and taking some away to solve problems.

Addition

  • What is addition? Addition is putting numbers together to find the total.

Example: If we have 20 apples and add 30 more apples, how many apples do we have in total? $20 + 30 = 50$ apples.

  • Practical Example: Imagine you have 40 marbles and your friend gives you 25 more marbles. How many marbles do you have now?

Subtraction

  • What is subtraction? Subtraction is taking away some numbers from a group.

Example: If we have 50 candies and eat 20 of them, how many candies are left? $50 - 20 = 30$ candies left.

  • Practical Example: You have 60 balloons, and 25 balloons popped. How many balloons are still okay?

Fun Activity

Let's play a game called "Add or Subtract":

  • Grab some toys or objects around you.
  • Ask a friend to give you a number to add or subtract.
  • Use the toys to solve the problem and have fun!

Remember

  • Always line up the numbers neatly when adding or subtracting.
  • Double-check your work to avoid mistakes.
  • Practice regularly to become a math pro!
