Numbers up to 10,000
Big numbers around us
Numbers up to 10,000 count things such as pupils in a county school, shillings in a savings group or kilometres between towns. The KICD Grade 4 curriculum builds on numbers to 1,000 learned earlier.
Place value
Each digit has a place and a value. In 3,752:
| Digit | Place | Value |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Thousands | 3,000 |
| 7 | Hundreds | 700 |
| 5 | Tens | 50 |
| 2 | Ones | 2 |
So 3,752 = 3,000 + 700 + 50 + 2. This is called expanded form.
Reading and writing
- 3,752 = three thousand, seven hundred and fifty-two
- 6,009 = six thousand and nine
- 10,000 = ten thousand
Comparing numbers
- Count the digits; more digits means a bigger number.
- If the digits are equal, compare from the left.
- Use > (greater than), < (less than) or = (equal to).
Example: 4,586 > 4,568 because 8 tens is more than 6 tens.
Ordering
Ascending means smallest to biggest: 1,205; 1,250; 2,105. Descending means biggest to smallest: 2,105; 1,250; 1,205.
Rounding
Round to the nearest ten: 3,752 becomes 3,750. Round to the nearest hundred: 3,752 becomes 3,800.
Try it
- Write 5,408 in words and in expanded form.
- Put in ascending order: 7,090; 7,009; 7,900.
- Round 6,847 to the nearest hundred.
