Insha ya Hoja (Argumentative Essay)

Insha ya Hoja (Argumentative Essay)

What it is

Insha ya hoja is an essay in which you take a stand on an issue (a motion) and defend it with reasons. In the Kenyan CBC Kiswahili curriculum, learners practise this in Grade 12 using clear structure, correct grammar (sarufi) and persuasive language (lugha ya kushawishi). These notes are in English with Kiswahili glosses.

Structure

  1. Utangulizi (introduction): explain the topic, define key terms and state your stand (msimamo).
  2. Kiini (body): three or more paragraphs, each with one point (hoja), explanation and example.
  3. Hitimisho (conclusion): summarise and restate your stand.

Vocabulary of agreeing and disagreeing

  • Ninakubaliana na... = I agree with...
  • Ninapinga hoja hii = I oppose this motion.
  • Kwa maoni yangu = In my opinion.
  • Ni dhahiri kwamba = It is clear that.
  • Wengine wanadai kuwa = Others claim that.

Useful connectors (viunganishi)

  • Kwanza, pili, tatu = first, second, third
  • Aidha / zaidi ya hayo = furthermore
  • Hata hivyo / ingawa = however / although
  • Kwa hivyo / kwa hiyo = therefore
  • Kwa mfano = for example
  • Kwa kumalizia / hatimaye = in conclusion

Paragraph model

Hoja: Elimu huleta maendeleo. (Education brings development.) Maelezo: Watu wenye elimu hupata ajira na huboresha kilimo na biashara. (Educated people find jobs and improve farming and business.) Mfano: Wakulima wanaosoma hutumia mbolea na mbegu bora. (Educated farmers use fertiliser and good seed.)

Language tools

  • Methali (proverbs): Elimu ni bahari. (Education is an ocean.) Haba na haba hujaza kibaba. (Little by little fills the measure.)
  • Misemo (idioms) and tashbihi (similes).
  • Maswali ya balagha (rhetorical questions): Je, taifa litaendelea bila elimu? (Can a nation progress without education?)
  • Correct tense markers: -na- (present), -li- (past), -ta- (future).

Model outline

Motion: Matumizi ya simu shuleni yanafaa. (Phone use in schools is suitable.)

  • Utangulizi: Simu ni kifaa cha mawasiliano na kujifunza.

  • Hoja 2: Huimarisha usalama wa wanafunzi (improves safety).

  • Hoja pinzani: Huleta usumbufu; suluhisho ni kuweka sheria. (Opposing view: distraction; solution is rules.)
  • Hitimisho: Simu zitumike chini ya usimamizi.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing Sheng or English words in formal writing.
  • Weak noun class agreement (kiambishi cha upatanisho), for example vitabu vizuri (good books), not vitabu mzuri.
  • Missing introduction or conclusion.
  • Repeating points.

Worked example sentence

Try it

  • List five connectors and use each in a sentence.
  • Build a counter-argument paragraph for a motion of your choice.
