Introduction

Algebraic expressions are mathematical expressions that consist of variables, constants, and mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In Grade 11, learners are expected to understand and manipulate algebraic expressions to solve problems and equations.

Variables and Constants

  • Variables: Symbols that represent unknown quantities or values that can change.
    • Example: If $x$ represents the number of apples, the algebraic expression $3x$ represents three times the number of apples.
  • Constants: Fixed values that do not change.
    • Example: In the expression $5 + 2$, the number 5 is a constant.

Terms and Coefficients

  • Terms: Parts of an algebraic expression that are separated by addition or subtraction.
    • Example: In the expression $3x + 2y - 5$, the terms are $3x$, $2y$, and $-5$.
  • Coefficients: The numerical factor of a term.
    • Example: In the term $4x$, the coefficient is 4.

Like and Unlike Terms

  • Like Terms: Terms that have the same variables raised to the same powers.
    • Example: $3x$ and $5x$ are like terms.
  • Unlike Terms: Terms that have different variables or the same variables raised to different powers.
    • Example: $2x^2$ and $3y$ are unlike terms.

Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

To simplify algebraic expressions, combine like terms by adding or subtracting coefficients of like terms.

  • Example: Simplify $2x + 3y - x + 5y$. $$2x + 3y - x + 5y = (2 - 1)x + (3 + 5)y = x + 8y$$

Expanding Algebraic Expressions

Expanding algebraic expressions involves removing parentheses by distributing the values inside the parentheses to each term.

  • Example: Expand $2(3x - 4)$. $$2(3x - 4) = 2 \times 3x - 2 \times 4 = 6x - 8$$

Common Mistakes

  • Incorrectly combining unlike terms.
  • Forgetting to distribute the coefficient when expanding expressions.
  • Misunderstanding the concept of coefficients in terms.
