Greetings in Our Mother Tongue

Greetings in Our Mother Tongue

Why learn our mother tongue

Kenya has many languages, such as Kikuyu, Luo, Luhya, Kalenjin, Kamba and many more. The language you speak at home is your mother tongue. The KICD curriculum helps learners read and speak it well.

Greeting with respect

  • Greet elders first and with a smile.
  • Use a respectful greeting for older people.
  • Greet in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Practise at home

Ask your parent or grandparent how to say these in your mother tongue: good morning, how are you, I am fine, thank you, goodbye.

Try it

  • Greet your grandparent in your mother tongue.
  • Teach a friend one greeting.
  • Say goodbye in your mother tongue.
