Unit 2936: Comprehensive Geometry and Trigonometry

1. Introduction to Geometry

  • Overview of geometry and its branches
  • Basic elements:
    • Points: definition and notation
    • Lines and line segments
    • Angles: types (acute, right, obtuse), measuring angles
    • Polygons: definition, classification by number of sides
    • Common geometric shapes and their properties

2. Properties of Triangles

  • Types of triangles by sides (equilateral, isosceles, scalene)
  • Types of triangles by angles (acute, right, obtuse)
  • Triangle congruence criteria (SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, RHS)
  • Properties of angles in triangles (sum of interior angles = 180°)
  • Properties of sides (triangle inequality theorem)

3. Circles and Their Properties

  • Elements of a circle: radius, diameter, circumference, chord, tangent, secant
  • Calculating circumference and area
  • Central angles and arcs
  • Inscribed angles and their properties
  • Relationship between angles and arcs

4. Quadrilaterals and Polygons

  • Classification of quadrilaterals:
    • Squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, rhombus
  • Properties of quadrilaterals: sides, angles, diagonals
  • Classification of polygons by number of sides
  • Regular vs irregular polygons
  • Sum of interior and exterior angles of polygons

5. Introduction to Trigonometry

  • Definition and importance of trigonometry
  • Right-angled triangles and trigonometric ratios:
    • Sine, Cosine, Tangent
  • Using trigonometric ratios to find unknown sides and angles

6. Trigonometric Identities

  • Pythagorean identities:
    • sin²θ + cos²θ = 1
  • Reciprocal identities:
    • cscθ = 1/sinθ, secθ = 1/cosθ, cotθ = 1/tanθ
  • Co-function identities:
    • sin(90° - θ) = cosθ, tan(90° - θ) = cotθ, etc.

7. Solving Trigonometric Equations

  • Techniques for solving equations involving sine, cosine, tangent
  • Using algebraic manipulation and identities
  • General solutions and principal values

8. Applications of Trigonometry

  • Solving real-world problems:
    • Finding heights and distances
    • Angle of elevation and depression
  • Analyzing periodic phenomena:
    • Simple harmonic motion examples
    • Wave properties

9. Similarity and Congruence

  • Definitions and differences
  • Similarity transformations:
    • Translation, rotation, reflection, dilation
  • Scale factors and their effect on lengths, areas, and volumes
  • Corresponding angles and sides in similar figures

10. Geometric Proofs

  • Structure of a geometric proof
  • Types of reasoning: inductive and deductive
