Introduction

Culture and heritage are the things that make us who we are. They include our traditions, beliefs, and values that are passed down from one generation to another.

What is Culture?

  • Everyday Clothing: The clothes we wear show our culture. For example, Maasai people wear colorful shukas, while the Kikuyu wear kikoi and lesos.
  • Food: Different tribes have unique foods they eat. For instance, the Luhya people enjoy ugali and chicken, while the Luo people love fish and ugali.
  • Language: Language is part of culture. Each tribe has its language. Swahili is a language spoken by many people in Kenya.

What is Heritage?

  • Traditional Dances: Dancing is a big part of our heritage. Each tribe has its unique dance moves like the Kikuyu's mugithi dance and the Kalenjin's Kalyet dance.
  • Art and Crafts: Some communities are known for their artistic skills. For example, the Maasai are famous for beadwork and the Kamba for wood carvings.
  • Storytelling: Passing down stories from one generation to another is part of our heritage. These stories teach us about our history and values.
