Fractions
Introduction
Fractions are parts of a whole. Imagine you have a pizza and you share it with your friends. Each slice you give them is a fraction of the whole pizza.
Understanding Numerator and Denominator
A fraction has two parts: the numerator and the denominator.
- The numerator is the number on the top of the fraction. It shows how many parts we have.
- The denominator is the number on the bottom of the fraction. It shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Example: Sharing Apples
Imagine you have 8 apples and you want to share them equally among 4 friends. The fraction of apples each friend gets is $\frac{8}{4}$.
- Here, 8 is the total number of apples (numerator).
- 4 is the number of friends (denominator).
Comparing Fractions
When comparing fractions, look at the numerators and denominators.
- If the numerators are the same, the fraction with the smaller denominator is bigger.
- If the denominators are the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is bigger.
Fun Activity
Grab some toy cars and share them with your siblings or friends. Create fractions like $\frac{3}{5}$ of the cars for you and $\frac{2}{5}$ for your friend.
Remember
- A fraction has a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number).
- The numerator shows the parts we have, and the denominator shows the total parts.
- When comparing fractions, look at the numerators and denominators to see which is bigger.
