Addition and subtraction

Grade 3 · Mathematics 1 min read

Introduction

In mathematics, we use addition and subtraction to combine or take away numbers.

Addition

Imagine you have 3 apples and your friend gives you 2 more. How many apples do you have in total?

$$3 + 2 = 5$$

So, you now have 5 apples in total!

Subtraction

Now, let's say you had those 5 apples and you ate 1. How many apples are left?

$$5 - 1 = 4$$

You are left with 4 apples now!

Fun Activity

Gather some items like toys or candies. Practice addition by putting them together and subtraction by taking some away. For example, if you have 4 toys and you add 2 more, how many do you have in total?

Remember

  • Addition means putting things together.
  • Subtraction means taking things away.
  • The symbol $+$ is used for addition and $-$ is used for subtraction.
  • You can use your fingers, toys, or drawings to help with addition and subtraction.
