Insha ya Hoja (Argumentative Essay)

What it is

Insha ya hoja is an essay in which you take a stand on an issue (a motion) and defend it with reasons. In the Kenyan CBC Kiswahili curriculum, learners practise this in Grade 12 using clear structure, correct grammar (sarufi) and persuasive language (lugha ya kushawishi). These notes are in English with Kiswahili glosses.

Structure

  1. Utangulizi (introduction): explain the topic, define key terms and state your stand (msimamo).
  2. Kiini (body): three or more paragraphs, each with one point (hoja), explanation and example.
  3. Hitimisho (conclusion): summarise and restate your stand.

Vocabulary of agreeing and disagreeing

  • Ninakubaliana na... = I agree with...
  • Ninapinga hoja hii = I oppose this motion.
  • Kwa maoni yangu = In my opinion.
  • Ni dhahiri kwamba = It is clear that.
  • Wengine wanadai kuwa = Others claim that.

Useful connectors (viunganishi)

  • Kwanza, pili, tatu = first, second, third
  • Aidha / zaidi ya hayo = furthermore
  • Hata hivyo / ingawa = however / although
  • Kwa hivyo / kwa hiyo = therefore
  • Kwa mfano = for example
  • Kwa kumalizia / hatimaye = in conclusion
