Crop rotation

Introduction

Crop rotation is a farming practice where different types of crops are grown in the same field in a planned order.

Importance of Crop Rotation

  • Prevents Soil Exhaustion: Just like how you need different foods to stay healthy, crops need different nutrients from the soil. Crop rotation helps maintain soil fertility.
  • Controls Pests and Diseases: Growing different crops in rotation can confuse pests and diseases, making it harder for them to attack the crops.
  • Improves Crop Yield: Each crop takes different nutrients from the soil. By rotating crops, the soil gets a chance to replenish the nutrients, leading to better crop growth.

Crop Rotation Example

Imagine you have three favorite vegetables: carrots, maize, and beans. Instead of planting them in the same spot every year, you can rotate them like this:

  1. Year 1: Plant carrots
  2. Year 2: Plant maize
  3. Year 3: Plant beans

This way, each crop gets different nutrients and the soil stays healthy.

Fun Activity

Try planting different seeds in small pots or containers at home. Label each pot with the name of the crop and keep a journal to track their growth. Observe how each plant grows differently!

Remember

  • Rotate crops to keep the soil healthy.
  • Different crops need different nutrients.
  • Crop rotation helps control pests and diseases.
