Introduction

Number patterns are sequences of numbers that follow a certain rule or order. By understanding number patterns, we can predict what numbers come next.

What is a Number Pattern?

Ascending Patterns

• Ascending patterns go up by the same amount each time. For example:
  • $2, 4, 6, 8, 10...$
• Everyday example: When counting by twos, such as when you count pairs of socks: $2, 4, 6, ...$

Descending Patterns

• Descending patterns go down by the same amount each time. For example:
  • $10, 8, 6, 4, 2...$
• Everyday example: When eating ice cream cones and counting down from the number of cones left: $3, 2, 1, ...$
