Introduction

Reading is the skill of looking at words and understanding what they mean. When we read, we can learn new things and go on exciting adventures without leaving our seats!

Understanding Words

• Words Everywhere: Words are all around us! They are in books, on signs, in cartoons, and even on our toys.
• Reading Aloud: When someone reads a story to you, they are showing you how to read and understand the words on the page.
• Letters Make Words: Letters are like puzzle pieces that fit together to make words. When we put letters together, we can read and understand what they say.

Fun Activity

Try reading a short story or a picture book with someone in your family. See if you can point out the words you know and ask about the ones you don't. Remember, it's okay to ask questions!
