Introduction

Ecology is the study of the interactions between organisms and their environment. It focuses on understanding the relationships between living organisms and their surroundings, including other living organisms and the physical environment.

Ecosystem

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with one another and with their non-living environment. Ecosystems can be large, like a forest, or small, like a pond.

Example: In a pond ecosystem, the fish, plants, insects, and water interact with each other and their physical environment such as sunlight and nutrients.

Biotic and Abiotic Factors

Biotic factors are living components of an ecosystem, including plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria. Abiotic factors are non-living components like temperature, water, sunlight, soil, and air.

Example: In a forest ecosystem, biotic factors include trees, insects, and birds, while abiotic factors include sunlight, water, and soil.

Food Chains and Food Webs

A food chain shows the flow of energy from one organism to another in an ecosystem. A food web is a network of interconnected food chains showing multiple feeding relationships in an ecosystem.

Example: In a grassland ecosystem, a food chain could be grass → grasshopper → frog → snake → eagle. A food web would show multiple interconnected chains involving various organisms.

Trophic Levels

Trophic levels are levels in a food chain or food web where organisms are grouped based on their feeding relationships. Producers are at the first trophic level, followed by primary consumers, secondary consumers, and so on.

Example: In a marine ecosystem, phytoplankton are producers at the first trophic level, then zooplankton as primary consumers, small fish as secondary consumers, and larger fish as tertiary consumers.

Habitat and Niche

A habitat is the physical environment where an organism lives, while a niche is the role or function of an organism within its ecosystem, including its interactions with other organisms and the environment.

Example: In a rainforest, a monkey's habitat may be the trees, and its niche could include eating fruits, spreading seeds, and interacting with other monkeys.
