Phonics

Phonics is all about sounds that letters make when we read and write. By learning phonics, we can figure out how to say new words and spell them correctly.

Section 1: Letters and Sounds

In phonics, each letter of the alphabet makes a special sound. For example, the letter 'A' sounds like 'ah', 'B' sounds like 'buh', and 'C' sounds like 'cuh'. When we put these sounds together, we can read and write words!

Section 2: Blending Sounds

Blending is when we put sounds together to make a word. For example, if we blend 'cuh', 'ah', and 'tuh', we get the word 'cat'. Try blending sounds like 'muh', 'eh', 'tuh' to make the word 'met'.

Quick Activity:

  • Say these sounds out loud: 'buh', 'eh', 'd'. Can you blend them to make a word?

Section 3: Rhyming Words

Rhyming words have the same ending sounds. For example, 'cat' and 'mat' rhyme because they both end with 'at'. Rhyming words sound similar at the end!

Section 4: Word Families

Word families are groups of words that have the same ending sound. For example, words like 'cat', 'hat', and 'mat' all belong to the '-at' word family because they end with the same sound.

Summary:

Phonics helps us understand how letters make sounds, blend sounds to read words, recognize rhyming words, and learn about word families. Keep practicing your phonics to become a great reader and writer!
