Summary Writing

Hey there! Today, we are going to learn about Summary Writing. A summary is a short paragraph that tells the main ideas of a longer passage in your own words.

What is a Summary?

  • A summary is like a short story that tells the most important parts of a longer story.
  • It should be brief and focus on the key points.
  • Remember, a summary is not a retelling word-for-word but capturing the main ideas.

Example: Original Passage: "The sun was shining brightly, and the birds were chirping happily as the children played in the park."

Summary: "The children played happily in the sunny park while birds sang cheerfully."

How to Write a Summary:

  1. Read the passage carefully.
  2. Identify the main ideas and key points.
  3. Write the summary in your own words.
  4. Check that your summary captures the most important parts.

Quick Activity: Read a short story or article. Write a summary of it in just 3-4 sentences, highlighting the main events.

In summary writing, we learn to capture the main ideas of a passage in a concise and clear way.
