Creation and the Fall of Man

Topic 2: Creation and the Fall of Man

1. The Biblical Accounts of Creation

The Bible contains two distinct accounts of creation in the Book of Genesis, which complement each other rather than contradict:

A. The First Creation Account (Genesis 1:1 – 2:4a)

  • Characteristics:
    • Written in a structured, chronological framework of six days, with the seventh day set apart as holy (the Sabbath).
    • God creates through the spoken word ("And God said, 'Let there be...'").
    • Emphasizes God's transcendence, majesty, and order. At the end of each day, God saw that it was good.
    • Human beings (male and female) are created last as the climax of creation, in the image and likeness of God.

B. The Second Creation Account (Genesis 2:4b – 25)

  • Characteristics:
    • Focuses more on the creation of human beings and their immediate environment (the Garden of Eden).
    • Portrays God as personally involved (immanent): He forms man out of dust from the ground and breathes life into his nostrils.
    • Plants and animals are created after man to serve his needs.
    • Woman (Eve) is created from the rib of man (Adam) to be a suitable helper.

2. Attributes of God from the Creation Accounts

  1. God is Creator: He is the source of all life and matter; everything exists because of His will.
  2. God is Eternal and Self-Existing: He existed before creation and is not part of creation.
  3. God is Orderly and Perfect: The universe reflects harmony, purpose, and design.
  4. God is Spirit: He transcends physical limitations.
  5. God is Moral and Caring: He provides for the needs of His creation and establishes moral guidelines for humanity.

3. Human Beings as Stewards of Creation

In Genesis 1:28 and Genesis 2:15, God gave human beings authority over the earth: "Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it... and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it."

  • Meaning of Stewardship: Humans are not absolute owners of the earth; they are caretakers or trustees appointed by God.
  • Responsibilities of Stewards:
    • Conserving and protecting the environment (trees, soil, water sources).
    • Caring for animals and treating them humanely.
    • Using natural resources wisely without exploitation or destruction.
    • Participating in creative work (farming, science, industry) that honors God and benefits society.

4. The Fall of Man (Genesis Chapter 3)

The harmony between God and humanity was disrupted through disobedience, commonly known as The Fall of Man.

The Temptation and Disobedience

  • God gave humanity freedom of choice, commanding them not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the middle of the garden.
  • Prompted by the serpent, the woman (Eve) and the man (Adam) yielded to temptation, doubted God's word, and ate the forbidden fruit out of pride and the desire to be like God.

Consequences of Sin

  1. Separation from God: Humans felt shame and hid from God's presence; fellowship was broken.
  2. Curse upon the Serpent: Condemned to crawl on its belly.
  3. Hardship in Human Life:
    • Pain in childbirth for women.
    • Toil, sweat, and struggle in farming/labor for men.
  4. Physical Death: Entry of mortality into human existence ("Dust you are and to dust you shall return").
  5. Alienation: Breakdown of relationships between humans (blame-shifting between Adam and Eve) and disharmony with nature.

Despite the Fall, God showed mercy by promising future redemption (Genesis 3:15, the Protoevangelium), foreshadowing salvation through Jesus Christ.
