Introduction

3. Basic Salts

  • Definition: Basic salts are formed when the cation of the salt has hydroxide ions.
  • Example:
    • When copper(II) hydroxide ($Cu(OH)_2$) reacts with sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$), copper(II) sulfate ($CuSO_4$) and water ($H_2O$) are formed: $$Cu(OH)_2 + H_2SO_4 \rightarrow CuSO_4 + 2H_2O$$

4. Double Salts

  • Definition: Double salts are compounds containing more than one kind of cation or anion.
  • Example:
    • Potash alum ($KAl(SO_4)_2 \cdot 12H_2O$) is a double salt containing potassium, aluminum, sulfate, and water ions.
