Topic 4: Sinai Covenant and Leadership: Moses

1. Early Life and Call of Moses

Moses was born during a time when Hebrew male infants were ordered killed by Pharaoh. Placed in a papyrus basket, he was rescued by Pharaoh’s daughter and raised in the Egyptian royal court.

  • After killing an Egyptian taskmaster who was beating a Hebrew, Moses fled to the land of Midian, where he spent 40 years as a shepherd.
  • The Burning Bush Call (Exodus 3): While tending sheep at Mount Horeb, God called Moses from a burning bush that was not consumed, commissioning him to return to Egypt and rescue the Israelites from slavery.

2. The Exodus and the Passover

  • The Ten Plagues: God sent plagues upon Egypt to demonstrate His power over Egyptian deities and break Pharaoh's stubbornness.
  • The Passover (Exodus 12):
    • The final event before release involved Israelites eating roasted lamb with bitter herbs, marking their doorposts with blood so the Angel of Death would pass over their homes.
    • Commemorated annually as a reminder of liberation from bondage.
  • Crossing the Red Sea: God parted the waters, allowing Israelites to escape while pursuing Egyptian chariots perished.

3. The Sinai Covenant (Exodus 19–24)

Three months after leaving Egypt, the Israelites arrived at Mount Sinai (Horeb), where God established a covenant with them, making them His treasured possession ("a kingdom of priests and a holy nation").

Steps in Ratifying the Covenant

  1. Purification: The people consecrated themselves for three days.
  2. The Giving of the Law: God descended upon the mountain in fire, smoke, and thunder, giving the Ten Commandments (Decalogue).
  3. The Blood Ritual: Moses built an altar, offered sacrifices, and sprinkled blood on the altar and on the people, sealing the agreement. The people responded: "All that the Lord has spoken we will do."

4. The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20)

The Decalogue outlines moral duties toward God (1–4) and toward fellow human beings (5–10):

  1. No other gods before Me.
  2. No idols or carved images.
  3. Do not misuse God's name.
  4. Keep the Sabbath holy.
  5. Honor your father and mother.
  6. Do not murder.
  7. Do not commit adultery.
  8. Do not steal.
  9. Do not give false testimony.
  10. Do not covet.

5. Leadership Lessons from Moses

  • Obedience: Moses followed God's commands despite personal inadequacies.
