(Alama kamili).

Introduction

In physics, force is a fundamental concept that describes the interaction between objects. It is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude and direction. Understanding force is crucial in explaining various phenomena in the physical world.

Definition of Force

Force can be defined as a push or pull acting on an object as a result of its interaction with another object. The SI unit of force is the newton (N), named after Sir Isaac Newton, and it is denoted by the symbol $\vec{F}$.

Types of Forces

  1. Contact Forces: These are forces that act on an object through direct contact with another object. Examples include frictional force, normal force, tension force, and applied force.

Example: A block of mass 2 kg is placed on a rough horizontal surface. If a force of 10 N is applied horizontally to the block, calculate the frictional force acting on the block if the coefficient of friction is 0.5.

    Solution: Given: Mass, $m = 2$ kg, Applied force, $F_{\text{applied}} = 10$ N, Coefficient of friction, $\mu = 0.5$

    The frictional force, $F_{\text{friction}} = \mu \times \text{Normal force}$

    The normal force, $F_{\text{normal}} = m \times g$, where $g$ is the acceleration due to gravity ($9.81 , \text{m/s}^2$)

    $F_{\text{normal}} = 2 \times 9.81 = 19.62$ N

    Therefore, $F_{\text{friction}} = 0.5 \times 19.62 = 9.81$ N

  2. Non-Contact Forces: These are forces that act on an object without direct contact. The most common non-contact force is gravitational force, which is the force of attraction between two masses.

Newton's Laws of Motion

  1. Newton's First Law: Also known as the law of inertia, it states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force.

  2. Newton's Second Law: This law states that the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass.

Mathematically, $\vec{F} = m \times \vec{a}$, where $\vec{F}$ is the net force, $m$ is the mass of the object, and $\vec{a}$ is the acceleration of the object.

Example: If a force of 20 N is applied to an object of mass 5 kg, calculate the acceleration of the object.

    Given: Force, $F = 20$ N, Mass, $m = 5$ kg

    Using Newton's second law, $F = m \times a$

    $20 = 5 \times a$

    $a = \frac{20}{5} = 4$ m/s$^2$

  3. Newton's Third Law: This law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In other words, if object A exerts a force on object B, then object B exerts an equal and opposite force on object A.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing mass and weight: Mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the force of gravity acting on an object.
  • Forgetting to consider the direction of forces: Since force is a vector quantity, direction matters in calculations.
  • Not understanding the difference between contact and non-contact forces.

Key Points

  • Force is a vector quantity with both magnitude and direction.
  • Types of forces include contact and non-contact forces.
  • Newton's laws of motion describe the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration.

Practice Questions

  1. A car of mass 1000 kg accelerates from rest to a speed of 20 m/s in 10 seconds. Calculate the net force acting on the car during this acceleration.

    Answer: Using Newton's second law, $F = m \times a$, where $a = \frac{v - u}{t}$, and $u$ is the initial velocity.

    $a = \frac{20 - 0}{10} = 2$ m/s$^2$

    $F = 1000 \times 2 = 2000$ N

  2. Explain the difference between mass and weight.

Answer: Mass is the amount of matter in an object and is constant, whereas weight is the force of gravity acting on an object and can vary with the acceleration due to gravity.

  3. A block of mass 5 kg is pulled horizontally across a rough surface with a force of 30 N. If the frictional force acting on the block is 20 N, calculate the acceleration of the block.

    Answer: Use Newton's second law, $F = m \times a$, where $F = 30 - 20$ N.

  4. Describe an example of a non-contact force and its effects on objects.

Answer: Gravitational force is a non-contact force that causes objects to accelerate towards each other. An example is the gravitational force between the Earth and objects on its surface.

  5. State Newton's third law of motion and give an example to illustrate it.

Answer: Newton's third law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. An example is when a person pushes against a wall, the wall exerts an equal and opposite force back on the person.

These revision notes cover the fundamental concepts of force in physics, including types of forces, Newton's laws of motion, and common mistakes to avoid. Practice questions are provided to test understanding and application of the topic.

(Alama 2)

(b) Fafanua sifa nne za kiisimu zinazojitokeza katika dondoo hili ukizingatia mifano kutoka kwenye kifungu. (Alama 8)

Mwongozo wa Kusahihisha wa KNEC:

(a) Sajili: Sajili ya Mahakamani / Mazingira ya Sheria. (Kutaja = Alama 2)

(b) Sifa 4 za kiisimu (Kila hoja alama 2: kutaja alama 1, kielelezo alama 1):
