Introduction to Biology

(Alama kamili).

Topic 1: Introduction to Biology

1. Meaning and Scope of Biology

Biology is derived from two Greek words:

  • Bios: meaning life.
  • Logos: meaning knowledge, study, or discourse.

Therefore, Biology is the scientific study of life and living organisms. An organism is any living entity, ranging from microscopic single-celled bacteria to massive multicellular organisms like blue whales and redwood trees.

  8. Taxonomy: The science of identification, naming, and classification of organisms.
  9. Parasitology: The study of parasites, their life cycles, hosts, and disease mechanisms.
  10. Entomology: The scientific study of insects.

3. Importance of Studying Biology

  1. Medical and Health Advances: Helps us understand disease transmission, pathology, pharmacology, and bodily immunity, aiding development of vaccines and antibiotics.
  2. Agricultural Productivity: Underpins modern crop breeding, pest control, soil management, livestock breeding, and food security.
  3. Environmental Conservation: Provides ecological insight into conserving biodiversity, protecting endangered Kenyan species, and mitigating climate change.
  4. Career Opportunities: Foundation for careers in medicine, pharmacy, veterinary science, agronomy, nursing, biotechnology, and forensic science.
  5. Understanding the Human Body: Equips individuals with biological knowledge to make healthy dietary, hygienic, and lifestyle choices.
  6. Entry into Scientific Inquiry: Cultivates critical observation, hypothesis testing, and laboratory skills.

4. Characteristics of Living Organisms

Biologists summarize the fundamental characteristics of life using the mnemonic MRS GREN (or MR NIGER D):

1. Movement and Locomotion

  • Movement: Change in position of either the entire organism or part of an organism.
  • Locomotion: Movement of the entire organism from one place to another (common in animals to search for food, mates, or escape predators).
  • Plants exhibit localized growth curvature movements (e.g., phototropism towards light).

2. Respiration

  • The biochemical breakdown of organic food molecules (primarily glucose) within living cells to release ATP energy.
  • Equation (Aerobic Respiration): $$\text{Glucose } (C_6H_{12}O_6) + \text{Oxygen } (6O_2) \longrightarrow \text{Carbon Dioxide } (6CO_2) + \text{Water } (6H_2O) + \text{Energy } (ATP)$$

3. Irritability (Sensitivity)

  • The ability of an organism to detect changes in its external or internal environment (stimuli) and respond appropriately to preserve homeostasis.
  • Examples: Eyes responding to bright light by constricting pupils; roots growing towards water.

4. Nutrition

  • The process by which living organisms acquire or synthesize organic nutrients required for energy, growth, and tissue repair.
  • Autotrophic Nutrition: Organisms (green plants, algae) synthesize complex organic compounds from simple inorganic substances using light energy (photosynthesis).
  • Heterotrophic Nutrition: Organisms (animals, fungi) ingest or absorb already synthesized organic matter.

5. Excretion

  • The separation and elimination of metabolic waste products and toxic by-products generated by cellular activities.
  • Examples in animals: Excretion of urea, excess salts, and water via kidneys; carbon dioxide via lungs.
  • Note: Egestion (defecation) is not excretion; it expels undigested food that never entered body cells.

6. Growth and Development

  • Growth: An irreversible, permanent increase in the size, dry mass, and cellular complexity of an organism.
  • Development: Qualitative physiological maturation and differentiation of tissues and organs over time.

7. Reproduction

  • The biological process by which existing organisms generate new individuals of their own kind, ensuring species continuation and preventing extinction.
  • Can be sexual (fusion of male and female gametes) or asexual (single parent produces genetically identical offspring).

5. Comparison: Plants vs. Animals

Feature Plants Animals
Cellular Wall Enclosed by a rigid outer cellulose wall. Lack cell wall; bounded only by cell membrane.
Chloroplasts Present in photosynthetic cells. Completely absent.
Mode of Nutrition Autotrophic (manufacture food via photosynthesis). Heterotrophic (ingest/absorb organic material).
Movement Localized movement of parts (tropisms). Locomotion of the whole organism is typical.
Growth Pattern Apical, localized to meristems (unlimited throughout life). Intercalary, diffused throughout body (ceases at adulthood).
Response to Stimuli Slow response; chemical/hormonal coordination. Fast response; coordinated by nervous and endocrine systems.
Excretory Organs Lack specialized excretory organs; store non-toxic wastes in dead leaves/bark. Possess specialized organs (kidneys, lungs, skin, liver).

6. The Scientific Method in Biology

The scientific method is a systematic approach used by biologists to investigate natural phenomena:

[1. Observation] ──► [2. Problem Question] ──► [3. Formulate Hypothesis]
                                                          │
[6. Theory / Law] ◄── [5. Conclusion] ◄── [4. Experimentation & Controls]
  1. Observation: Using sensory organs and measuring instruments to notice patterns or anomalies in nature.
  2. Formulation of Hypothesis: Proposing a tentative, testable scientific explanation for the observation.
  3. Experimentation: Designing controlled investigations with an experimental setup (with the variable factor) and a control setup (variable omitted).
  4. Data Collection & Analysis: Recording quantitative and qualitative results systematically.
  5. Conclusion: Validating, modifying, or rejecting the hypothesis based on collected evidence.

7. Laboratory Safety and Common Apparatus

Essential Biological Safety Rules

  1. Never eat, drink, chew, or taste anything in the biology laboratory.
  2. Always wear protective lab coats, chemical-resistant gloves, and goggles when handling corrosives or bio-specimens.
  3. Label all specimens, stains (e.g., iodine solution, methylene blue), and reagents clearly.
  4. Report all chemical spills, cuts, animal scratches, or broken glassware to the laboratory technician immediately.
  5. Disinfect dissecting kits, petridishes, and examination surfaces before and after practical work.
  6. Dispose of sharp biological wastes (scalpel blades, lancets) in specialized sharps containers.

8. Summary Key Points for KCSE Revision

  • Biology = Bios (life) + Logos (study).
  • Main branches: Botany, Zoology, Microbiology.
  • Life processes: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Nutrition, Excretion, Reproduction, Growth (MRS NERG).
  • Difference between excretion (metabolic wastes) and egestion (undigested fecal matter).
  • Scientific investigations must always feature a control setup to prove that the observed effect is caused solely by the single variable under investigation.
